Major update next week: Academic Ratings

Academic Ratings will be recalculated using an updated formula that better reflects a school’s academic performance.

The current version of Academic Ratings has not changed since the launch of the site and an update has been long overdue.

Don’t be alarmed if you see big changes in how schools are rated - it’s only meant to be used as a overview!

The new ratings will be released tomorrow (10/23/25)

The new Academic Ratings are live!

For more information on changes, please read through this post: Update & New Downloadable Data: Academic Scores and Overall Scores

Hi Adrian,

The new formulas really brought down schools’ numbers. Any idea if there are a couple of things dragging them down?

Thank you!

Yes, they are definitely lower than they were previously. The old formula incorporated certain data points that I felt were skewing results too high (like graduation rates) and didn’t really reflect the measure of academic rigor that I was looking for.

What’s important is the relative scale of the scores. I just added school rankings which can be found in the “Overview” section of any school or program page. The text is shown next to the Academic and Survey Scores. This will give you an idea of what the scores mean relative to all schools in NYC.

Another thing to note about these scores is that they are generalizations based on somewhat arbitrary data points. They’re only meant to steer you towards schools and should not be used to judge the entirety of a school’s academic abilities.

Hope that helps!
