Exciting developments regarding applicant info! (Part 1)

It seems like the DOE is open to sharing more yearly applicant data. They fulfilled the first of my applicant-related FOIL requests, which is a breakdown of applicants for Ed. Opt. programs by Ed. Opt. group. What this allows you to do is better understand what kind of students are applying to programs and give you an additional datapoint for understanding your chances of getting an offer.

As an example, let’s consider the “Manhattan Business Academy General Program (A12A)” at Manhattan Business Academy (02M392). If you take a look at the “Applicant Analysis” section in the program description, you’ll see hyperlinked GE and SWD applicant numbers. Clicking on the GE applicant number (93 for the 2023-24SY) will open a popup window showing the breakdown of those applicants. In this window, it shows that there were 15 from the High category, 51 from Middle, and 27 from Low. Since Ed. Opt. programs draw equally from each group, you could say that applicants in the High category had the best chance of getting an offer.

I am hopeful that the DOE will provide similar breakdowns for Open and Screened programs. Aside from giving additional insight into who applies to these programs, this would allow NYC-SIFT to greatly improve the quality and accuracy of its estimated cutoffs and offer prediction bar.
